The Founding of Murphy Builders

Leigh’s passion for construction and quality buildings has driven him from the start. After completing his apprenticeship, he began his carpentry career in Brisbane City before moving to the Sunshine Coast. In 1975, with a heart full of ambition, Leigh launched Murphy Builders in Mooloolaba. Decades later, our head office still stands proudly in the heart of Mooloolaba, a testament to our enduring legacy.

A Family Legacy in Construction

Murphy Builders is a genuine family company, building for Australian families and domestic corporations. Over the years, many family members have contributed to our legacy, including Leigh’s former wife, his sister, and his children. Today, Leigh’s daughter Brooke Bastien co-directs with him, along with Mark Berry, who has been by Leigh’s side for over 25 years.

Our Journey Through the Years

In 1975, Leigh focused on residential construction, building house and land packages, and shaping many Sunshine Coast land estates. By the mid-1990s, recognising a gap in the market, Leigh expanded into commercial construction, specialising in multi-residential dwellings, industrial, and commercial projects.

During the GFC and into the 2010s, Murphy Builders diversified further, establishing three core business units: commercial construction, investment housing, and high-end custom homes. This period also marked our regional expansion, where we commenced interstate construction, a tradition we proudly continue today.

Making a difference

Daniel Morcombe Foundation

For over 5 years, Murphy Group has proudly sponsored the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. In 2019, we built ‘Daniel House,’ funded by generous donations and grants. This Sunshine Coast centre is home to the Foundation’s Walk Tall counselling service, helping hundreds of children and families recover from trauma each year.

STEPS

The Murphy Group partnered with the STEPS charity, along with many local trades and businesses, to create Australia’s first live-in training home for young people with disabilities. Led by the team at Murphy's, this facility was funded entirely by donations.

Dance For Daniel

Each year, Murphy Group proudly sponsors the Dance for Daniel event, supporting the Foundation’s mission to keep kids safe and honour Daniel’s legacy.

Build It For The Kids

The Build it for the Kids initiative is another partnership where Murphy Group and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation collaborate with generous local trades, suppliers, and the community to construct a home. Once completed, the home is auctioned off, with each stakeholder donating time or resources. 100% of the profits go to the Foundation, supporting efforts to keep our kids safe.

Maroochy Surf Classic

Since 2011, the Murphy Homes Maroochy Surf Classic has been a must-see surf carnival, attracting professional ironmen, ironwomen, and surf athletes from across the country each year. Murphy’s is delighted to be the major sponsor of this esteemed event.

Parcels of Peace

Christmas is a time for giving at Murphy Group. Every year, our team assembles large hampers of food, books, and gifts for disadvantaged families. In collaboration with Parcels of Peace and other like-minded organisations, we dig deep to donate to those in need, making the holidays a little brighter for the less fortunate.

Maroochy Swans Rugby Union

At Murphy Group, we are proud supporters and sponsors of the Maroochy Swans Rugby Union Club. Founded in the same year that Murphy Group was incorporated, the Club has been a longstanding local rugby institution ever since.

Bernier Bay School

Murphy Group is committed to education for all. We worked closely with local Ni-Vanuatu and residents of Aore Island, Vanuatu, to help fund and build the Bernier Bay School for local children. Murphy’s also organised a fundraising drive, providing building materials, books, and school supplies for Bernier Bay School.

Cyclone Pam

The team at Murphy Group also organised a large donation drive and funded a shipping container full of relief goods sent over to Vanuatu following devastating Cyclone Pam. The team worked with Give to Vanuatu who collects desperately needed supplies to help those affected rebuild their lives.
